Easy Tahina Recipe – the perfect start to an authentic Mediterranean Meal!


This is an easy Tahina Recipe with a simple twist that makes this an excellent source of protein.

Tahina – sometimes spelled tahini – is a paste of ground sesame seeds used in cooking. North African/West Asian tahini is made of hulled, lightly roasted seeds. East Asian sesame paste is made of unhulled seeds.

Once you have prepared your Tehina, you can use it as a dip or a sandwich spread, or you can use it in other mid-east recipes such as Hummus or Grilled Eggplant. Tahina is also delicious served over brown rice – that is one of my favourite meals! Oh, and try it over a baked potato instead of (calorie loaded) sour cream or butter – YU-MM-Y!

The yogurt-sesame combination in this recipe makes this a good source of protein and sesame is high in iron, magnesium, manganese, copper, and calcium and contains vitamin B1 and vitamin E.

INGREDIENTS
2 cups sesame seed paste
1 cup yogurt
1/2 cup water
juice of 1/2 lemon
2 cloves garlic
Salt and pepper to taste

PREPARATION
Whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl, or whiz them all together in a blender or food processor. You will get a creamy, smooth consistency. If needed, you can add water by the spoonful until you get the right consistency. Tahina will thicken up as it "settles" after a few hours. If you want to use it as a dressing for vegetables or over tofu, thin it out with a bit more water water. For dipping or for sandwich spread, you will want a thicker consistency.
